DIY Winter Paw Protection Recipe

Wednesday, November 24, 2021

Now that winter is here, we need to be more mindful of our dogs' paws. We're out for walks and runs and our dogs paws are bare. They may get weather-related damage and or get some de-icing road treatments that we don't want our dogs to ingest. The DIY paw protection recipe below is from Dr. Janet Roark, more famously known as the "essential oil vet." Here at Fur Ever Yours Dog Rescue, our resident pack gets #doterra essential oil as part of their daily health routine. Please work with your own veterinarian as you introduce essential oils and other holistic treatments to your dog.

ALL SEASONS PAW PROTECTION

3 oz beeswax

3 Tbsp Calendula infused oil

3 Tbsp Avocado oil

3 Tbsp Coconut oil

2 d Myrrh

2 d Frankincense

2 d Lavender

Rescue dogs need protection from the elements

Melt the beeswax and coconut oil in a double boiler – take off heat and add Calendula oil and Avocado oil. As mixture cools, add essential oils and place in containers wide enough to fit your dogs paw (shallow tins work well for this). Apply topically to paws as needed for protection and moisture.

The above recipe is from Dr. Janet Roark, Essential Oil Vet.

Everyday Should Be Love Your Pets Day

Saturday, November 6, 2021

Meet Moya. She is a sweet camera-shy girl. She agrees, "everyday should be love your pets day." Our volunteer rescued Moya from a bad breeding situation in Okanogan, WA. She was one of 18 puppies being sold. The "breeder" was kicking puppies as he made his way through the small trailer. 12 puppies were rescued and found their forever homes that day.

Now Moya lives with 2 other dog siblings and a dad that spoils them. This pack goes on runs and long walks together. They also play on a creek near their property.

Always A Play Date At Fur Ever Yours Dog Rescue

Sunday, October 31, 2021

It's always a play date here at Fur Ever Yours Dog Rescue. There's always a fair amount of dogs coming and going. This tan and white chihuahua is being checked out by our resident dogs. When your dogs go on a play date, there are a few key things you need to keep in mind:

Safety first - Take into account the health and vaccinations of your dog's playmates. It may be awkward to ask "the question" however, your dog's health is of utmost importance. Breed and age are also things to consider. Some breeds (terriers) may run and chase well into advanced ages while the bigger dogs may want to  "wrestle." You don't want your 5-lb Chihuahua or Yorkie wrestling with a Bull Mastiff on their first date.

Playdate with resident dogs and rescues

Age - Puppies may just annoy senior dogs. Depending on your dog's temperament, your dog may "correct" the pup by snapping at them.

Introduce playmates outside in open areas. Going inside someone's home may trigger resource guarding. Perhaps your dog got to close to his playmate's bed or food bowl triggering a growl from the resident dog.

Lastly, do not leave the dogs unsupervised. Easy to say, as the dog parents comingle and drop their guard down, dogs are left to be dogs and the play date may become unpredictable.

Our First Rescues

Friday, October 22, 2021

After our beloved rescue Pedro (chihuahua) crossed the rainbow bridge, we adopted 3 rescues from Yakima and Wenatchee. We started out getting a “Look-A-Like” that our new adoptee was being called Pedro by friends and family. Our new dog had the same tan and white color causing our friends to do a double take when meeting him. It took a while to learn our newly rehomed 6 year old Chiweenie’s name. We named him Willy.

Willy and his dad would go on long road trips together. I was grieving and missing Pedro. I decided to rescue another dog. This time, a white wire-haired terrier mix needed to be rehomed. She was very skittish. She trembled a lot. However, with lots of one-on-one time, this gorgeous dog came out of her shell. We named her Duchess.

Save, Love, Rehome.

Within a few months, we decided to move full-time to our mountain retreat. We had a cabin in a remote town in North Central Washington. I believe we were still grieving about Pedro when we decided to adopt a malnourished German Shorthaired Pointer named Hans. His ribs and backbone were sticking out. He weighed about 45 pounds and his tail was chewed out. The vet guessed that he was less than 2 years old. We adopted him from the Wenatchee Humane Society. We were told he has food aggression. That behavioral assessment turned out to be false. Hans was probably suffering from shelter shock. Shelter shock is common in dogs that are abandoned. Some cower and tremble in a corner. Some behave aggressively. Most shelter workers have good hearts. However, due to lack of funding and resources, shelter shock cannot be avoided.

After 2 years living in our remote mountain home, a family member in the Atlanta area was facing life changes. She no longer could take care of her 2 dogs. Ringo, a Spaniel and Beagle mix and George, a Dachshund, were going to be surrendered to a local shelter. They’re a bonded pair and would face tremendous odds being rehomed together. Our family decided it would be best to take them in. So, in just a couple of years, we faced the death of 1 dog and ended up with 5.

Our extended family has never purchased a puppy from a breeder. All our dogs were rehomed from owner surrenders or dog shelters in the Seattle area. The idea of starting a dog rescue was seeded long before we sought funding to start our very own foster-based rescue. Now that Willy is about 16 years old, we find ourselves wanting to rescue another dog. Thus, the idea of a dog rescue came into fruition. Fur Ever Yours Dog Rescue was born.

Everyone Needs A Snuggle Buddy

Tuesday, October 12, 2021

Meet Duchess, our resident snuggle buddy. She’s very active outdoors and we are convinced, as her adoptive parents, that she will win any agility course for dogs. However, inside the house, she just transforms into this doll. She will snuggle on the couch. She will snuggle on the bed. She will snuggle on any chair you sit on. Do you need a snuggle buddy? Check out our dogs. You’ll find one you can foster, sponsor or adopt.

Dogs make the best snuggle buddies.

Duchess is one of our rescues from Yakima, WA. She was very skittish. She hid under the bed for days. When I adopted her, our other rescue Willy was out of town with my partner. After a few days in the city with Duchess, I decided go to the country and join Willy and my partner. Upon meeting Willy, Duchess blossomed. She started playing and forgot about hiding and shaking. She was still leery of the "man" in the room. However, for the most part, Willy took Duchess under her wing. Willy was quite a bit older at about 6 years old. We adopted him because he was one of the oldest dogs in the shelter. Willy "trained" Duchess. He showed her some agility moves. She learned how to pin other dogs down with her back side. Duchess loved giving Willy play bites on the neck.

Duchess is pictured below with Willy (the tan Chiweenie) and Hans, the German Shorthaired Pointer Mix. She loves her brothers. She is the best snuggle buddy.

Adopt Dont Shop - Trending Hashtag

This handsome dog is a German Shorthaired Pointer Mix. Some people believe he is a pure breed. Some think his ears are too small to be a Pointer’s. Either way, we love him. We adopted Hans when he was about 2 years old. We were moving to a remote mountain location and we thought our family of 2 dogs needed a “big dog” as a companion. We saw Hans at the Humane Society of Wenatchee website and reserved him. My partner drove 3 hours with the intent of meeting Hans. However, when he got there, Hans was nowhere to be found. There was a mixup. Hans was shipped off to Seattle with a vanful of other dogs for an adoption event. My partner called me frantic and stated I had to get Hans from the adoption event. I arrived with 5 minute to spare and Hans was our new “#adoptdontshop” rescue dog.

We decided to keep Hans’ shelter name. He was full grown but weighed only 45 lbs. In my car, he ate a loaf of bread and some apples. I had forgotten that I had some groceries in the back seat. Poor guy was starving. The shelter warned us that Hans exhibited food aggression at the shelter. We never witnessed this in the 8 years or so that we’ve rehomed Hans. He is gentle. We suspect he was surrendered by his owner because he is afraid of gunfire. His former family wanted him to be a bird dog. And really, Hans is a bird dog. Just don’t let him hear loud bangs. He is always aware of grouse, crows, eagles and hawks that fly over our property. Hans also hates coyotes. When coyotes howl, Hans barks his “big dog bark” and shows the coyotes our property lines. Upon waking up in the morning, Hans barks from all the corners of our property. He patrols the lines withfences and also never crosses the part with no fence. He also respects gates that are left open. In the winter when snow mounds are just below the top of our fences, he respects the fence. He doesn’t jump. Hans knows where his home is.
